Raised in an immigrant household our home was crowded with crafts from India. From batiks to miniatures to sculptures, walls and shelves were full. These visual artifacts helped me understand the culture we came from. Patterns and colors surrounded me and formed my visual vocabulary.

I use beeswax in my work for it's luminosity and depth and in contrast I use spray paint through stencils to create flat patterns. The letter stencils I am using serve as formal elements. They also refer to communication or language which is not always readable similar to the culture of my parents that is not always understandable to me

Kakaria's wall-hanging, "semi-sculptural" panels of white encaustic are stunning. They're both abstract and representational: links of flowers and circles run up and down and across her thick panels. Just by looking, you wouldn't know that the images — particularly the marigolds — stem from the joyful Indian weddings that Kakaria attended as a child. But her work, and the dreamy experience of looking at it, involves you in a kind of vague reminiscence. She covers her floral and circular forms in thick, creamy white encaustic; the sensual layers evoke a sense of reverie and depth, but the flower forms pop off the background and maintain a solid presence in the here and now.
